When am I required to file a biennial update?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires most carriers with a USDOT number to update their MCS-150 every two years — even if nothing has changed.

Who must file a biennial update?

You are required to file a biennial update if you have a USDOT number, including:

  • Owner-operators
  • Small and large fleets
  • Inactive carriers (in many cases)
  • Intermodal Equipment Providers (IEPs)

FMCSA requires this update even if your company information has not changed.

When is the biennial update due?

Biennial updates are due every 24 months based on your USDOT number. The deadline depends on:

  • The last digit of your USDOT number (month)
  • The next-to-last digit (odd or even year)

Do I need to update if nothing changed?

Yes. FMCSA requires the biennial update even if:

  • Your company information is unchanged
  • You stopped interstate operations
  • You are no longer actively operating

What if my information changed recently?

FMCSA requires you to update your registration within 30 days of changes such as:

  • Address or phone number
  • Email
  • Number of drivers or vehicles
  • Company officers or operation type

If changes were reported within 12 months of your biennial deadline, FMCSA may not send a reminder.

What happens if I don’t file?

Failure to complete your biennial update can result in:

  • Deactivation of your USDOT number
  • Civil penalties up to $1,000 per day
  • Maximum penalties up to $10,000
